The MIT Concert Band will perform their Spring Band Concert on Tuesday, May 15, 2018 at 7:00 pm, at MIT's Kresge Little Theater, 48 Massachusetts Avenue, Cambridge, MA 02139, MIT "room" W16-035, on the other side of Massachusetts Avenue from MIT's main entrance at 77 Massachusetts Avenue. Music directors Thomas Reynolds and Collin Myers will conduct the program. Featured will be a world premiere of Sinfonietta for Concert Band by MIT faculty member Peter Child. It was commissioned by the MIT Concert Band to honor John D. Corley, who established this ensemble  
and who conducted it for 51 years. Collin Myers will conduct it. Other works will include Toccata Marziale by Ralph Vaughan Williams, Acadiana by Frank Ticheli, Folk Song Suite by Ralph Vaughan Williams, Symphony in B flat by Paul Hindemith, Elsa's Procession to the Cathedral by Richard Wagner, Acrostic Song by David Del Tredici, Blue Lake Overture by John Barnes Chance, Prayer of St. Gregory by Alan Hovhaness, and Norman Dello Joio's Fantasies on a Theme by Haydn.  
 
Thomas E. Reynolds is the coordinator of student teaching at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst and is the Wind  
Ensemble Director at Anna Marie College in Paxton, MA. A graduate of the New England Conservatory of Music and Ithaca College, Mr. Reynolds has taught music in high schools located in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and New York. He has been very active as an adjudicator, clinician, manager, and host of several all-state and regional music festivals. He is completing the requirements for a doctorate in music education at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst.  
 
Collin Myers is the Director of the Worcester Youth Orchestra Clarinet Choir. He teaches band, marching band, and instrumental lessons at the Auburn Middle School in Auburn, MA. Previously, Collin taught at beginning band and chorus in Rockland, MA and was the high school band director at The Bromfield School in Harvard, MA. Mr. Myers received a Masters in Conducting from the American Band College of Sam Houston State University. Collin earned his bachelor’s degree in Music Education from Ithaca College (Summa Cum Laude).  
 
Peter Child is Professor of Music at MIT, where he chaired the department of Music and Theater Arts from 1996 to 1999. He received his B.A. in music from Reed College in 1975, then entered the graduate program at Brandeis University and earned his Ph.D. in musical composition in 1981. His composition teachers include William Albright, Jacob Druckman (Tanglewood)  
and Seymour Shifrin. Peter Child has written music in many different genres, including music for orchestra, chorus, computer synthesis, voice, and a wide variety of chamber groups. Ensembles that have performed his music include the John Oliver Chorale, the Pro Arte Orchestra, the Lydian String Quartet, Collage, Parnassus, New York New Music, the Pittsburgh New Music Ensemble, Lontano (Great Britain), Interensemble (Italy), Speak Percussion (Australia), and many others.

The MIT Concert Band was founded in 1948 by students that wished to form a musical group with an emphasis on performing music that was written for band, as opposed to arrangements of orchestral compositions. The band was directed for fifty one years by Conductor Laureate John D. Corley, who made the band widely known for its performance and commissioning of original compositions for winds. In December of 1953, the MIT Concert Band became one of the first ensembles to devote itself entirely to original works for winds in the belief that the wind band is an important and unique means of musical expression, and that its repertoire is deserving of performance.
