Opal Ensemble Presents Free Lunchtime Concert in Arlington on Friday, February 19

Opal Ensemble, a group of professional musicians that aims to surprise and delight audiences with performances of an array of different musical works, will present “Of the Shimmering Winter Air” — a free one-hour lunchtime concert — at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, February 19th at Arlington Town Hall (730 Massachusetts Avenue, Arlington). Celebrating the cold weather season, the concert will feature four works for duos and trios — one of which will be a world premiere. Funded in part by a generous grant from the Arlington Cultural Council, the concert will feature two compositions that are explicitly aimed at evoking childhood experiences: Rachel Holstead’s Dissolving Into Light and Michael McLaughlin’s Playground Scenes. With extended instrumental techniques, atmospheric sonorities, and spiky rhythms, Holstead’s piece is inspired by childhood memories in Northern Ireland. Variously raucous and dreamy, McLaughlin’s piece exudes an infectious, childlike energy. The third piece on the program, Kennel, is a witty and entertaining duo for viola and piano. Written by well-known Boston composer Martin Amlin, this work presents a set of miniatures, each named for a particular breed of dog. Composer David Owens’s Trio Opalesco — written especially for Opal Ensemble — is the longest work on the program, and is also a world premiere. An opulent and compelling four-movement piece, it conveys a spectrum of moods and is intermittently sensuous, grand, mysterious, romantic, and meditative.
