Metropolitan Wind Symphony Band Concert: Angels, Dances, and Songs

Metropolitan Wind Symphony Band Concert: Angels, Dances, and Songs

The Metropolitan Wind Symphony will continue their 45th season with their Winter Band Concert on Sunday, February 28, 2016 at 3:00 pm, at the Scottish Rite Masonic Museum, 33 Marrett Road, Lexington, MA. MWS Music director Lewis J. Buckley will conduct the program.

The "Met Winds" will present the haunting sounds of tuned wine glasses, whirlies, and the voice of soprano soloist Molly Callahan in Frank Ticheli’s Angels in the Architecture. The MWS will also feature the world premiere of their commission Alleles by composer Jason Huffman, and clarinet soloists David Minot and Wolcott Humphrey in Buckley’s own Fantasy for Two Clarinets.

Also on the program will be Fanfare for Winds by Kevin Wilt, Symphonic Songs for Band by Robert Russell Bennett, Commando March by Samuel Barber, and Four Colonial Country Dances by James Curnow. Mr. Buckley will deliver a pre-concert lecture at 2:30 pm.

Lewis Buckley earned his undergraduate degree from the Eastman School of Music and his Master’s degree from Connecticut College. In 1975, he became the Coast Guard Band’s fifth director at age 27 and held that post for 29 years. He continues to compose, arrange, and publish music. He also remains an active trumpet soloist, frequently combining solo appearances with conducting, often in premiere performances of his own commissioned works. Buckley has a diverse background, having conducted bands, orchestras, and choruses in all styles of music from classical to commercial to jazz.

Composer Jason Huffman graduated from Oberlin Conservatory of Music, majoring in trumpet performance and composition, and graduated from Boston Conservatory with a Master of Music in Composition. He received the Roger Sessions Memorial Composition Awards.

Clarinetist Wolcott Humphrey, originally from western NY, earned a B.M. in Clarinet Performance from Ithaca College in 2006, and went on to earn a M.M. and a Graduate Diploma in Clarinet Performance from the New England Conservatory in 2008 and 2009, respectively.

Originally from Monroe, NY, clarinetist David Minot received his formal music education at the Ithaca College School of Music in Ithaca, NY.

Molly Callahan first sang Angels in the Architecture with her high school band, the Concord Carlisle Concert Band, in which she also performed as principal trumpet. In the Fall, she began at Muhlenberg College as a freshman, and is studying music, theatre, and environmental sustainability.

Tickets are $18 for adults, $14 for seniors, $6 for students, and are free for children under 5. They are available at the door or can be reserved by telephone. Call the MWS Concert Line at (978) 419-1697 to reserve or purchase tickets.
