MetWinds Band Concert: Frank and Igor

MetWinds Band Concert: Frank and Igor

This season will be Lew Buckley’s tenth season with MetWinds, and we will celebrate with one of the most exciting programs we have ever
presented. Our Fall Concert, “Frank and Igor,” will feature the music of just two composers, Frank Ticheli and Igor Stravinsky. Ticheli gets the
entire first half, beginning with Sun Dance and Rest, and concluding with the world premiere of his eagerly-awaited Acadiana, commissioned jointly by MetWinds, UMass Lowell New England Youth Wind Ensemble, and MIT Concert Band. Acadiana is a three movement work that refers to and reflects the Cajun region comprising much of the southern half of Louisiana. Then, following the intermission, we will take on perhaps the biggest, most difficult piece we have ever played, Merlin Patterson’s superb wind transcription of Igor Stravinsky’s famed Rite of Spring. This will be musical grandeur
personified and will represent a rare opportunity. Don’t miss this one!

The concert will be held on Sunday, November 6, 2016 at 3:00 pm, at the Scottish Rite Masonic Museum, 33 Marrett Road, Lexington, MA. MetWinds Music director Lewis J. Buckley will conduct the program. Mr. Buckley and Mr. Ticheli will deliver a pre-concert lecture at 2:30 pm.

Composer Frank Ticheli’s music has been described as being “optimistic and thoughtful” (Los Angeles Times), “lean and
muscular” (The New York Times), “brilliantly effective” (Miami Herald) and “powerful, deeply felt crafted with impressive flair and an ear for striking instrumental colors” (South Florida Sun-Sentinel). Ticheli (b. 1958) joined the faculty of the University of Southern California’s Thornton School of Music in 1991, where he is Professor of Composition. From 1991
to 1998, Ticheli was Composer in Residence of the Pacific Symphony.
