The 9th Biennial State of Clay

The 9th Biennial State of Clay

The 9th Biennial State of Clay celebrates traditional and contemporary vessels, wall pieces ceramic sculptures, and decorative arts. The range of ceramic expression highlights a variety of building techniques and firing methods. This is the only juried ceramic show that targets clay artists with roots in the Commonwealth. Organized by the members of the LACS Ceramics Guild, the gallery sitters are experienced ceramists who look forward to welcoming the public and answering questions. The public has an opportunity to appreciate the breadth of creativity from the artists within their own state, to view their thoughts and ideas in clay, and experience the expansive world of the ceramics medium and the growth of ceramic art in the state of Massachusetts.

This year’s exhibition was juried by Wayne Higby, professor at the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University and director/curator of the Joseph-Schein Museum at Alfred University. His work is in numerous museums including the Met in New York and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. He will be traveling to Massachusetts to attend the Artists Reception on May 20 and present a juror’s talk at 7:30pm. All are invited.

The State of Clay is being featured in the Freedom’s Way National Heritage Area and the National Park Service’s HIDDEN TREASURES 2016. This program is supported in part by a grant from the Lexington Council for the Arts, a local agency and is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency.
